Scouts Good Turn Donation Drive

Goodwill has a strong history with the Scouts.  In 1950, the first of many successful “Good Turn for Goodwill” donation drives was initiated.  Over 3,000 scouts collected donations in the first drive. At its peak, nearly 30,000 scouts participated in this annual drive, which accounted for 50% of Goodwill’s material contributions in a given year.

A good turn for tomorrow starts with repurposing, reusing, and recycling.

Earn Your Goodwill Scout Patch!

Girl Scouts and Scouts are invited to collect gently used items (clothing, books, shoes, purses, and housewares) and deliver them to your local Goodwill to earn a “Good Turn” patch!  Donation drives can be organized anytime, but spring is a popular season for spring cleaning. Scouts can earn a badge by donating at least three bags, or troops can work together to earn vouchers based on weight, which can then be donated to another nonprofit in need of clothing.

Recycle!

Organize a recycling program in your neighborhood and bring Goodwill all the unwanted items (one shoe, torn clothing, electronics that do not work, cardboard, plastic bags, and more). The scout troop with the most donations (measured by the pound) will receive a tour of the Goodwill recycling center.

How Donation Drives Work

  • Ask your neighborhood residents and churches to participate. Churches can be great at getting the word out.
  • Goodwill can provide you with flyers that you can take door-to-door. Ask your neighbors to put bags out (you choose a date), and then you go back and pick up the bags.
  • Bring donations to any donation center, tag your bag with your troop number, tell the attendant it’s for the Girl Scouts or Scouts.

What your efforts support: Our mission: Through the power of donated goods, Goodwill trains and supports people to be their best. Many people know Goodwill for the retail stores and the treasures that can be found. However, many do not realize where the revenue goes. Those dollars support workforce development programs in our community to help people, including those with disabilities and other barriers, learn skills that lead to gainful employment. We also provide job search assistance and resource navigation to help alleviate barriers to employment. These programs and services are all FREE to the community (funded through the generous donations of others).
