Goodwill Omaha Acquires Future Operations Center to Expand Community Impact
Goodwill Omaha has purchased property near 108th and I Streets as the organization looks to expand its capacity to meet the growing needs of the Omaha community.
The property will become the organization’s new Operations Center. The Retail Outlet Store, Good Threads, e-commerce, recycling and logistics operations, corporate headquarters and workforce training space will all be housed in this new facility.
This purchase of the new building will allow Goodwill to efficiently process and distribute donated goods to Goodwill Omaha’s 16 retail stores and four specialty stores, reinvesting millions of dollars in financial support into free workforce training and community resources.
“This is about much more than moving into a larger building,” said Tobi Mathouser, President and CEO of Goodwill Omaha. “We’ve seen the needs in our community continue to grow and we’ve reached a point where our current space is limiting our ability to respond. This investment gives us the capacity to accept more donations, expand our programs, create more opportunities, and ultimately serve more people in our community.”
Goodwill Omaha has outgrown its current 92,000-square-foot space at 72nd and F Street and is now renting storage trailers to accommodate the growing volume of donated goods.
The new 327,000-square-foot facility will eliminate the need for off-site storage trailers while increasing Goodwill Omaha’s recycling capacity from approximately nine million to 25 million pounds annually. That means more donated goods can be repurposed and kept out of local landfills.
Goodwill Omaha’s current lease on the existing Retail Operations Center will expire in 2028. Purchasing a permanent home allows Goodwill Omaha to invest in its long-term ability to serve the community.
“This investment will also create a long-term home for our employees, strengthening our workforce and ensuring we have the resources to support the individuals who make our mission possible every day,” said Mathouser.
Rather than building new, Goodwill Omaha is giving an existing building new life. The location was selected after a three-year search for its central location, proximity to major transportation routes and ability to efficiently move donated goods to stores and communities. Access to public transportation also helps remove barriers for those who rely on it to reach Goodwill Omaha’s programs and services.
The new Operations Center is expected to open in 2028.
